It’s Showtime!

You’ve planned the perfect podcast, following the guidelines for show prep we covered in Chapter 6. As a result, you have the confidence of knowing just what you want to do and how you want to do it. Now it’s time to get yourself into a frame of mind that will allow you to create a terrific show, not just this time but every time you get ready to hit the “record” button. To do that, a good place to start might be spending a few moments studying Serena Williams. No, Serena isn’t doing a podcast—at least she hasn’t started one yet! But what she does when she steps on to a tennis court contains an important lesson that can help your podcast tremendously.

Every time Serena gets ready to serve, she follows the same routine. She bounces the ball the exactly the same way every time. She readies her racquet the same way. She tosses the ball in the air the same way. And, finally, she takes the same swing—every time. Her routine before every serve doesn’t vary from one serve to the next. She’s able to focus because she has eliminated all the variables and all the distractions.
