Remember that these days, even with all the enhancements a sound engine has, it is still a lower-risk component of the overall game engine than something like an animation system, a rendering system, or a nonplayer character (NPC) system. Keep in mind that work may not begin right away on the sound engine, which is all the more reason to have a solid preproduction asset-building plan in your schedule.

High-Level Scheduling

I'll begin by taking an hypothetical development cycle that is carved in stone from the beginning. Unreal did not have that, but it was born out of a system that assumed delays would occur and profits would be huge as long as there wasn't too much delay.
