Chapter 9. Looking Ahead > The Popularity of Game Audio

The Popularity of Game Audio

From day one, game-audio folks have complained about not being recognized for their outstanding efforts, by their peers and the public. Let's start by asking whether this is important, then look at the ideal approach to this issue.

It isn't as important as developing a new kind of heart medicine or solving the overpopulation problem, but it's hard compared with plugging instruments into amps in a garage and jamming away. The musicians who jam so well, and are so highly regarded that hundreds of thousands or even millions of people buy their music, deserve recognition. The same applies to game-audio developers. Many do it, but few do it well. The ones who are considered top-notch deserve to be recognized. By “best” game audio, I mean that which game-audio professionals as well as the public consider unique, memorable, and effective; the sound and music of the movie Star Wars fall into this category.
