MP3-encoded audio is far and away the most popular encoding method used to transfer sound across the Internet. Its widespread use might even be the primary reason you hold this book in your hands. MP3 isn’t actually a format, however, and only recently has it become popularized as more than an on-demand, download-only codec. The popularity of MP3 for file sharing and music downloads has almost automatically made it a popular streaming format. Manufacturers have quickly jumped on board and added support for the MP3 standard to their encoding and producing tools.
