About Tempo

Chapter 1 touched briefly on the subject of tempo. The word tempo, like many bits of musical jargon, comes from Italian. Translated literally, it means time. In music, it refers to the speed, or pace, of a piece of music. Tempo can be described in terms of how a piece feels: blues ballads have a slow tempo; punk rock songs have a fast, driving tempo. But tempo can also be described in numerical terms. Tempo is measured in beats per minute (bpm), where a beat is the background rhythmic pulse of a song. In GarageBand, you can choose any tempo between 60 and 240 bpm.
