Chapter 4. Working With Loops > About the Loop Browser

About the Loop Browser

Sifting through the thousands of loops that come with GarageBand to find just the right one for your song can be an intimidating task. Fortunately, the program provides a nifty tool for the job: the loop browser (Figure 4.1).

Figure 4.1. The loop browser.

The loop browser allows you to sort your loops using the keywords embedded in the Apple Loops installed with the program. You progressively narrow your search for specific loops based on three criteria:

  • Genre (or style)

  • Instrument

  • Mood

If you've bought one or more of the GarageBand Jam Packs, or if you've downloaded any of the myriad loops available online, your loop library may be so vast that searching for a specific loop seems like a hopeless task. Good news! GarageBand 2 lets you limit your search to a part of your collection.

The left part of the loop browser is taken up with the search interface, and the results of your search are displayed on the right, in a list that shows each loop's name and its type, tempo, key, and number of beats. You can also use the search results listing to mark frequently used loops as favorites for quick access. And the loop browser lets you preview, or audition, loops so you can try them out with your song.
