About Musical Typing

The Musical Typing window is a welcome addition to GarageBand 2. This new feature overcomes some of the limitations of the onscreen keyboard by letting you play and record music into GarageBand by typing on your computer's keyboard. The Musical Typing window itself provides a map to the functions your keyboard can perform (Figure 7.18). Musical Typing is rather sophisticated, allowing you not only to enter basic pitch information, but also to control MIDI parameters such as pitch bend, modulation, sustain, and velocity (for more detailed descriptions of these classes of MIDI data, see “The Types of MIDI Controller Data” in Chapter 10). A black-and-white screenshot doesn't do this window justice—the keys that govern MIDI parameters are color-coded according to function.
