Chapter 12. Mixing Your Song > About Track Automation

About Track Automation

The track mixer volume slider provides an easy way to set the output level for a track, but this method is also inflexible. The level you set is maintained unwaveringly throughout the song. If you add a volume curve to a track, on the other hand, you can create volume changes over time, or fades. Raising a track's volume level from silence is called a fade-in, and bringing it back down to silence is called a fade-out. A more sophisticated effect is the crossfade, in which one track fades in while another track fades out.
