Chapter 13. Exporting and Importing > Using iTunes to Compress Your Song

Using iTunes to Compress Your Song

GarageBand exports songs as uncompressed (that is to say, large) AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) files. AIFF is a high-quality format, similar to the format used to store music data on CDs, but AIFF files also have correspondingly large file sizes. This makes AIFF inconvenient as a file-sharing medium. You can use iTunes to rip the file to a compressed format, reducing its size by a factor of 10 in the process. You can then e-mail your song to friends, or download it to a portable music player (such as an iPod), or post it on a Web site.
