Chapter 10. Editing MIDI Data > About Pedal Markings

About Pedal Markings

“Real” pianos—analog, acoustic pianos—incorporate a sustain pedal. This is a foot-operated device that, when engaged, prevents the piano strings from being damped when a key is released, allowing the strings to continue to vibrate. MIDI instruments duplicate this effect digitally, recording a parameter called, surprisingly enough, Sustain. (For more information, see Chapter 5 and “Editing MIDI Controller Information” later in this chapter.)
