Chapter 10. Editing MIDI Data > Changing Note Velocity

Changing Note Velocity

Velocity is the MIDI term for the loudness or softness of a note. It is a measure of the force with which a key is struck. A note's velocity is indicated in the track editor by its color: the darker the note, the higher its velocity. The range of possible velocity values runs from 1 to 127 (in the MIDI spec, the lowest possible velocity is 0, but for some reason GarageBand doesn't let you achieve absolute silence).
