About Audio Units

Software effects are often distributed as plug-ins so they can be loaded into the program on an as-needed basis. To facilitate the sharing of plug-ins among music applications, several standardized plug-in formats have been established. As part of the specification for Mac OS X, Apple introduced yet another plug-in format, the Audio Unit. The Audio Unit format is attractive to music software developers because, unlike other plug-in formats, it is supported at the system level, which enables programmers to very easily create music applications compatible with it.
