Chapter 11. Applying Effects > Using the Compressor Effect

Using the Compressor Effect

The compressor effect reduces the dynamic range of a track (or of a song, if applied to the master track). It's especially useful for individual tracks that have a wider dynamic range than the rest of the song: for example, a vocal track that gets extremely soft in places and very loud in others. Such a track is very difficult to balance with other tracks, because if you boost its lowest volume so it can be heard above the rest of the song, its loudest passages will cause distortion (not to mention deafness!).
