About Transposition

To transpose music is to move it up or down in pitch, so it sounds in a different key. The unit of transposition is the semitone, or half-step. This is the distance between two adjacent notes on a piano keyboard: from C to C#, for example, or from E to F. Twelve semitones is equivalent to an octave, or the distance between two notes of the same name, such as C2 and C3 (Figure 9.22).
