Lesson 3. Understanding Workflow Techniq... > Importing Audio into the Arrange Win...

Importing Audio into the Arrange Window

Importing audio into the Arrange window is easily accomplished using either the Audio > Import Audio File option, or even dragging and dropping audio files from a Finder window directly into the Arrange area. Of the two techniques, drag and drop is perhaps the easiest. Additionally, you can drag and drop multiple files into the Arrange area at one time. Let's explore both techniques now.

1.
In the Arrange window's Track List, select the first audio track (the one at the top of the Track List).

2.
Make sure the SPL is at 1 1 1 1.

In the next step you will import an audio file using Logic's Audio menu. It's important to note that when you import audio files this way, they always drop into the selected track at the SPL's current position.

3.
From Logic's main menu bar, choose Audio > Import Audio File.

The Open file dialog appears.

4.
Navigate to APTS_Logic_7 > Song Files > Lesson 3 Project Files > Audio Files, and select and House Deep Tribal Beat.aif.

5.
In the bottom right corner of the Open file dialog, click the Open button.

The audio file is imported into the arrangement and placed at bar 1 of Track 1.

6.
Open a Finder window over your arrangement and navigate to the APTS_Logic_7 > Song Files > Lesson 3 Project Files > Audio Files folder.

7.
Hold down the Shift key and select both the House Searing Organ.aif and the House Warm Chord Synth.aif files.

8.
Drag both files into the Arrange window, and drop them when the pointer is directly over 1 1 1 1 (the first beat of bar 1) of the Audio 2 track.

9.
Close the Finder window.

In Logic, the Add Selected Files to Arrange dialog appears.

This dialog controls how Logic adds multiple files to Arrange window tracks. The options on offer include:

Create new tracks Logic creates new tracks for each added audio file. Additionally, the new tracks are named the same as the added audio files.

Use existing tracks Logic adds each audio file to a different, preexisting track in the Arrange window.

Place all files on selected track Logic imports the files and places them end to end on the same track.

10.
Click the “Use existing tracks” radio button.

When you select this option, the ghosted “Copy audio file names to track names” check box becomes available. This is a great option to use because it automatically names the tracks the same thing as the audio files you are importing.

11.
Select the “Copy audio file names to track names” check box.

12.
In the bottom right corner of the Add Selected Files to Arrange dialog, click OK.

Each file is added to a separate track in Logic's Arrange window. However, at the moment the track names may not have updated. Here's a little trick to ensure they do.

13.
Deselect both of the imported files.

14.
Reselect one of the imported files.

The track names update to reflect the names of the imported audio files.
