What You've Learned

  • The Matrix Editor displays MIDI data graphically, showing individual notes as boxes whose size represents duration and whose position relative to a keyboard represents pitch.

  • New notes created with the Pencil tool in the Matrix Editor are always of the same duration and velocity as the last note selected.

  • To change the duration of a note in the Matrix Editor, position the Pencil tool or Arrow tool over the right edge of the note and drag until the note is of the correct duration.

  • When turned on, the Toggle MIDI In button lets you enter notes into the Matrix Editor using an external MIDI controller.

  • If you double-click the Toggle MIDI In button, a lock appears on the left of the button, and pressing an external MIDI controller key moves the note selected in the Matrix Editor to the same note as the pressed key.

  • To ensure that the MIDI instrument is not triggered as you move notes around the Matrix Editor, turn off the Toggle MIDI Out button.

  • The notes in the Matrix Editor can be several different colors, and these colors represent their velocity values.

  • To create a node, click inside the HyperDraw area.

  • To move a node, grab it and drag it to a new position.

  • To delete a node, click it quickly.

  • To create a HyperDraw curve, hold down Ctrl-Option and then drag the line between two nodes. The type of automation curve you create depends on whether you drag the line up, down, right, or left.
