Chapter 7. Looping Sound

Chapter 7. Looping Sound

One of the basic building blocks of many types of modern music is the loop. You can take a short snippet of music or sound effects and repeat it over and over again so that it provides a beat or background upon which you can build a new composition.

Musicians and recording engineers used tape loops to generate repeating sounds as far back as the 1960s. Today, musicians are far more likely to create loops on computers. Rap, hip-hop, and alternative-rock musicians, especially, have done much to advance the art. They commonly use samples from other recordings as building blocks for their own records (after obtaining the necessary rights, of course).
