Chapter 11. Audio Restoration > Eliminating Clicks and Pops

Eliminating Clicks and Pops

These days, more and more audiophiles (and other music fans who have never discarded, sold, or given away their record collections) are rediscovering the unique experience of listening to vinyl. Dance and hip-hop DJs and indie-rock fans have also contributed to the revival of interest in records and turntables.

There's no denying the tactile thrill of setting the needle down in a record's groove and enjoying music played on a high-quality phonograph. Nevertheless, one irrefutable fact about records is that they do not last forever, so many vinyl fans have adopted the practice of archiving their precious records onto CD-R or other digital media. Audition not only offers the ability to record audio to your hard drive from a phono preamp via a computer sound card (see Chapter 3), it can also remove the clicks and pops that can mar the sound of even the newest, cleanest records. The Noise Reduction submenu in the Effects menu contains two tools for eliminating clicks and pops: the Auto Click/Pop Eliminator tool and the Click/Pop Eliminator tool.
