Opening a VSTi

Many of the features of Cubase covered in the rest of this book involve virtual racks. These are software versions of the standard-sized rack-mount systems used for mounting hardware in recording studios. The VST instruments mount on a virtual rack.

To open a VSTi

1.
Open the Devices menu and select VST Instruments (Figure 7.6).

Figure 7.6. Select this option to open the VST Instruments rack.

The VST Instruments panel, or virtual rack, opens (Figure 7.7). The rack has 64 slots, though not many computers can run 64 simultaneous VST instruments.

Figure 7.7. In this figure, all 64 slots in the VST rack are unused.

2.
Click any of the slots labeled No VST Instrument.

A pop-up menu opens, showing all of the currently installed VST instruments.

3.
Select the instrument you want to use.

In Figure 7.8, the a1 synth is being selected from the Synths submenu.

Figure 7.8. All installed VST instruments are visible in this menu. Your own menu will likely look different.
