Chapter 7. Using VST Instruments > Controlling VST Instruments with MIDI

Controlling VST Instruments with MIDI

By definition, VST instruments respond to MIDI notes. Some, but not all, VST instruments go one step beyond this and also respond to MIDI CC messages. A VSTi that responds to these messages is not only more fun to work with, but is much easier to control with familiar tactile controls like knobs, sliders, and wheels.

Most hardware MIDI controllers—such as keyboards—allow their knobs and sliders to send CC messages. By matching the CC message being sent by the controller to the parameter that you want to change on the VSTi, you can control any parameter on a VSTi with a physical, tactile controller.
