VST Instruments

Software-based synthesis and sampling is probably one of the most important capabilities in the history of audio computing. Cubase VST lead the way with VST instruments, which are plug-ins of various instrumental and percussive sounds that can be played by MIDI. This simple idea has led to an amazing variety of VST instruments, from dead-on emulations of famous synthesizers, to software samplers that rival the highest-end hardware samplers in complexity and creativity, to previously untried methods of sound creation and transformation.

Cubase uses a virtual rack to house VST instruments (Figure 2.32). The VST Instruments rack can have up to 32 software synthesizers or samplers running simultaneously. The amount of synthesis power is limited only by the power of the host computer. Cubase also includes support for automation of every parameter within a VST instrument and, of course, options to save presets of the sounds you create for use in future projects. Chapter 7 of this book is dedicated to VST instruments.
