Chapter 5. Recording MIDI > Cycle Recording: Mix Versus Overwrite

Cycle Recording: Mix Versus Overwrite

When you cycle record audio, you create a new audio part for each cycle of the loop. But when you're recording MIDI, the nature of MIDI allows some choice over how cycle recording works. You can toggle cycle recording between Mix mode and Overwrite mode using the Transport bar.

Mix mode (Figure 5.24) acts much like Merge mode for non-cycle recording. Incoming MIDI is added to the already recorded MIDI for that track. This allows a part to be built up over multiple passes, playing the hi-hat on one cycle, the kick drum on the next cycle, and so on. When recording is stopped, all MIDI played during all cycles is included in the single MIDI part.
