Chapter 5. Recording MIDI > Configuring a MIDI Track to Record

Configuring a MIDI Track to Record

After adding the appropriate tracks to your project and giving meaningful names to your MIDI inputs and outputs, you need to take one final step before clicking the Record button: you need to select the correct MIDI inputs and outputs. The easiest way to do this is by using the Track inspector.

To select MIDI inputs and outputs

1.
In the track list, select the MIDI track you want to record. If the inspector is not already open, click the Show Inspector button at the top left of the Project window (Figure 5.7).

2.
The top tab of the inspector (the one with the name of the track) is used to display the most common parameters for a track. Click the MIDI input setting to display a drop-down list (Figure 5.8).

3.
From the MIDI input list, choose your MIDI controller or select All MIDI Inputs.

4.
Click the MIDI output setting to open another drop-down list, and in this list, select the MIDI synth, sound module, or VST instrument to which you want the MIDI data sent (Figure 5.9).

5.
If you want the MIDI data sent to a particular MIDI channel, click the setting marked chn: and select the channel (Figure 5.10).
