Chapter 11. Mixing Audio > Sending Audio to FX Channels

Sending Audio to FX Channels

After you've set up the FX channel, you can send audio to it from any audio channel in the Cubase mixer. There are many reasons to do this. First, using a reverb plug-in as a send effect for six channels is a whole lot easer on the CPU than using a reverb as an insert on each of six different channels. Send effects can also be very useful for putting a group of instruments together in a mix. Say, for example, that you combine four acoustic guitar parts and a shaker to form a rhythm track. Creating an effects send with a chorus or delay part and feeding just a tiny bit of each track to the effects send can pull the tracks together by creating a common sonic space for the individual instruments. These are just two situations where send effects are very useful.

To send audio to an FX channel

1.
Create and configure your FX channel as described in the previous example.

2.
Find an audio channel you want to use as a source for the send and set it to display sends in the extended mixer.

3.
Click one of the effects slots on the audio channel that will be source for the send. All groups, output busses, and FX channels will be available.

Figure 11.40 shows the DelayFlange FX channel being selected.
