What Is Monitoring?

In the world of audio, monitoring is the term used to describe various ways to hear recorded and live sounds. When musicians talk with recording engineers about monitoring, they generally mean being able to hear a mix of a previously recorded song so they can play along with it. On stage, monitors are the speakers sitting on the floor in front the band. Singers often have a mix with lots of their own vocals in those monitors so they can hear themselves above the rest of the band.

When recording in a studio, roughly similar setups apply. The musicians usually monitor through headphones to hear themselves without creating extra noise in the recording space. The person in charge of the mixing board and who runs the recording session monitors through speakers in the control room (Figure 1.22).
