Chapter 6. Entering MIDI Manually > Changing Velocity in the Drum Editor

Changing Velocity in the Drum Editor

Creating and editing continuous controller data in the Drum editor is very similar to performing the same tasks in the Key editor. The Controller lane is in the same place and is configured to show CC data in the same way. The main difference is that since each note triggers a different sound, the Controller lane shows data for only that selected sound.

One of the most common parameters for drum and percussion sounds, velocity, needs to be changed fairly often in the Drum editor. Rarely do drum sounds always play back at the same volume. In the preceding examples, all notes were entered with a velocity of 127 (the setting for the Insert Velocity parameter). Using the Controller lane, you can easily change the quarter-note part to a slightly lower velocity, with the eighth-note pattern lower yet.
