Chapter 10. Editing MIDI > Transposing a MIDI Track with the Inspector

Transposing a MIDI Track with the Inspector

The MIDI Track inspector was introduced in Chapter 5, “Recording MIDI.” The Track inspector can be used for more than just selecting MIDI inputs and outputs, however, because it offers control over a number of parameters, such as volume, pan, and timing offset. The inspector for a MIDI track also offers an option to transpose all notes on the track by a specified amount. This can be very useful when a song written in one key needs to be changed later to another key to make it easier for a performer to work with. Transposing can also come in handy to match a pitched audio sample that isn't in the key of the song.

To transpose a MIDI track using the Track inspector

1.
If the Track inspector is not visible, open it by clicking the Show Inspector button on the Project window toolbar (Figure 10.8).

Figure 10.8. Use this button to show and hide the Track inspector.

2.
Click a MIDI track. The Inspector for a MIDI track has six tabs that show different information about the track. Click the small plus sign next to the Track Parameters tab to display it (Figure 10.9).

Figure 10.9. Clicking the small plus sign next to the Track Parameters tab will open that tab for editing.

3.
On the Track Parameters tab, select Transpose. Then do one of the following:

  • Click the up and down arrows to transpose up or down in increments of one semitone.

  • Click the numeric value in the Transpose field and enter a new value directly.

  • Click below the number to open a slider (Figure 10.10) to change the amount of transposition.

Figure 10.10. This slider controls transposition for the entire track. All notes on the track will be transposed by the amount set here in the Track inspector.
