Chapter 10. Editing MIDI > Extracting a Groove from a MIDI Part

Extracting a Groove from a MIDI Part

Before you can apply groove quantizing, you need to create a groove that will be used as a quantize source. The easiest way to do this is by using another MIDI part.

As the following exercise shows, Cubase makes extracting a groove very easy. The hard part is finding a good source from which to extract. Often a drum beat or percussion part will have one part that carries the “heart” of the beat. In a bossa nova groove, for example, it's usually the push-pull relationship between the hi-hat and snare drum that provides a lot if its feel. In hip-hop beats, the hi-hats are almost always in perfect time, so the kick or snare drum or another percussion part or the bass will be important.
