Quantizing

In previous sections of this book, the term quantize referred to the Quantize setting or Length Quantize setting of Snap. These settings determine the influence of Snap on the precise movement or copying of MIDI data.

However, MIDI data can also be quantized—that is, by quantizing MIDI data, you change its timing. The changes can be subtle or dramatic, but whenever a MIDI part or note is quantized, the rhythm changes. The simplest kind of quantizing in Cubase is used to clean up notes so that each note begins at a specific meter division. In other words, each note is moved so that it begins on the nearest eighth, sixteenth, or other user-defined note.
