Chapter 16. Automating a Mix > Automating Effects Parameters

Automating Effects Parameters

While automating the on/off status of an effects send and its level for one track is certainly useful, you can do much more with effects automation. Any parameter in a VST effect can be automated. While mixing, you might want to change the feedback on a delay plug-in, increase the depth of a phase shifter, or change the dry:wet ratio in a vocoder. In the following example, an insert effect is automated on an audio track.

To automate effects parameters

1.
For the channel you want to automate, select and activate an insert effect.

2.
Activate write automation for all tracks, and deactivate read automation if necessary.

Figure 16.11 shows a plug-in ready for automation.

Figure 16.11. The Write button is active, so this plug-in will write automation when its parameters are changed.

3.
Begin playing the project and change the effect parameters as you like; stop the project when you are finished.

4.
Turn off write automation and turn on read automation.

5.
Rewind the project and play it back to see your automated moves.

You can also look in the Project window; insert effects automation will be visible in automation subtracks for the track that has been automated (Figure 16.12).
