Chapter 16. Automating a Mix > Selectively Boosting a Part

Selectively Boosting a Part

Another common use for graphical, manually written automation is to selectively boost a small part of a track. Often mixers refer to this as pushing a certain part of a track. A syllable may be a little too quiet in one word, or a particular word may need to be emphasized in a vocal; in either case, you can use manual automation to boost the sound.

To boost part of a track with the Draw tool

1.
Zoom in to see the section of the track that you want to automate (Figure 16.33).

Figure 16.33. One word in this phrase needs to be boosted slightly to make it more intelligible.

2.
From the toolbar, select the Draw tool as described in the previous task.

The mouse pointer will change into a pencil when you have the right tool selected.

3.
Drag to create a small volume boost where the word should be more prominent (Figure 16.34).

Figure 16.34. After writing with the Draw tool, only the one word in the phrase will be boosted.

4.
Activate read automation for the track and play the project to hear the results of the automation.
