Chapter 16. Automating a Mix

Chapter 16. Automating a Mix

One theory of mixing holds that the only proper way to mix is with a board. If sounds are recorded correctly, according to this theory, all you need to do is push the faders up to unity gain and then leave things alone. You might get lucky with a track every now and then, and the board will be enough, but usually when you listen to your song with the levels about right, there will be some parts that you want to change.

Mix automation is the ability to record your mixing moves and have them play back automatically, rather than having to move the controls yourself every time you play the track. Instead of changing the level of the vocal track manually, for example, you can have Cubase record your changes to the fader and play them back automatically.
