Chapter 14. Audio Effect Plug-Ins > Insert and Send Effects

Insert and Send Effects

An insert effect is the simplest kind of effect. The audio enters the effect, is modified, and then is routed to the fader for that channel and to whatever output that channel feeds.

With send effects, the audio is split and routed to two or more paths. The audio sent to the “normal” path (which can include insert effects and EQs) runs directly to the channel fader. Audio routed to the send path is processed by the effects on an FX channel and then usually sent to the master output. The fader on the FX channel controls the final volume of the effected audio in the master mix. Often an audio channel in the mixer will have both send and insert effects, and some effects lend themselves specifically to use as send or insert effects. Others can work quite nicely in both contexts.
