Chapter 14. Audio Effect Plug-Ins > Group Channels and Effects

Group Channels and Effects

Most people use effects mainly as either insert or send effects, but Cubase provides another way to work with effects: using group channels. Chapter 11 includes a brief discussion of how to control the volume of multiple channels by assigning the channels to one group. One common application of group channels is in drum mixes; each individual drum sound can be mixed and effected, and in addition, the whole drum mix can be controlled (and effected) by routing each part of the drum mix to a group. You can also put insert and send effects in the group channel for routing and effects flexibility.

The following task shows how to apply an effect to a group of tracks at the same time. Putting a compressor across the stereo drum mix is standard operating procedure for rock and pop drums, but the same basic approach works in many other situations as well.
