Chapter 14. Audio Effect Plug-Ins > When to Use Pre-Fader Send Effects

When to Use Pre-Fader Send Effects

The most accurate answer to the question of when to use a pre-fader send effect is whenever you need control over the level of the effect independent of the channel fader. Here are a few situations where a pre-fader send effect is useful:

  • With some effects, such as gates and vocoders, one sound triggers or modifies another sound. If you don't want the dry signal at all, you can use a pre-fader send effect.

  • For some special effects, you may want the effect louder than the dry signal. For example, you may want a lead vocal to be very dry, with the backing vocals very low but soaked in reverb. A pre-fader send effect lets you control the level of the backing vocals going to the reverb effect.

  • You can use pre-fader send effects to create headphone mixes for multiple musicians.
