Using Dynamics

As with EQ, using compression is an art, and your skills will get better with practice. If you already know a good bit about compression, the controls for the Dynamics plug-in should be transparent. If you're not familiar with compression, spend some time working through the presets, and practice with different kinds of audio material.

Compression is nearly always used as an insert effect. The point of a compressor is to control the dynamics of a sound, and routing only part of a channel to a compressor will not give full control over its dynamics. A compressor used as a send effect and set to reduce the transient pluck part of a bass sound will do so for only part of the signal. Only an insert effect will fully control that part of the sound. The following example shows you how to compress an electric bass track to bring it out more in the mix.
