15.6. Advanced Real-Time Simple Profile Test

As described in Chapter 13, the Advanced Real-Time Simple (ARTS) object type is a superset of the Simple object type, which targets real-time coding situations by employing a back-channel to monitor the video throughput in order to adapt the temporal resolution and reduce error propogation. In this context, the ARTS profile (which includes the Simple and ARTS object types) provides two major functionalities that were tested with two separate tests: error robustness and temporal resolution stability. In fact, although targeting similar applications to the Simple profile, the ARTS profile provides some improvements, notably these [N2825]:

  • Improved error robustness: The ARTS profile can provide the same quality of service level regarding the Simple profile under about 10× worse error conditions. This allows the expansion of the applications as well as the improvement of the performance already supported by the Simple profile if some conditions are fulfilled—notably, the existence of an upstream (back) channel.

  • Quick error recovery: Quick error recovery from erred states can be provided while keeping a high coding efficiency. Artifacts are removed even faster in the case of scene changes.

  • Transmission buffering delay and temporal resolution stability: The transmission buffering delay can be stabilized by minimizing the jitter of the number of bits per VOP. Large frame skips also are prevented by imposing some restrictions on the buffer, and the encoder can control the temporal resolution even for highly active scenes. This is important for low-delay applications.
