Chapter 13. Profiling and Conformance: A... > Overview of Profiles in MPEG-4

13.3. Overview of Profiles in MPEG-4

This section gives an overview of the profiles in MPEG-4 that were defined as of October 2001. It first lists the media profiles—visual, audio, and graphics—and then the nonmedia profiles. These nonmedia profiles are defined in the Systems part of the standard, as are the graphics media profiles [MPEG4-1]. The audio and visual media profiles can be found in the Audio [MPEG4-3] and Visual [MPEG4-2] parts of the standard, respectively. The media profiles govern the usage of object types and BIFS elements that can be used to create the objects in the MPEG-4 scene.

Figure 13.2 provides a graphical representation of the profile structure in MPEG-4. Note that the figure gives examples and does not list all profiles, nor does it reflect hierarchical relationships.
