3.4. Summary

This chapter has explained the means to manage and synchronize potentially large numbers of ESs in an MPEG-4 presentation. ODs describe sets of streams related to a single media object. The OD is also the link between the streaming resources and the scene description that will be detailed in the next chapter. Object content information adds further detail to the description of each media object, and the IPMP framework allows attaching proprietary systems to identify and protect content based on the intellectual property rights associated to it.

Timing behavior and synchronization of ESs is based on a system decoder model and supported by well-known time stamp mechanisms, embodied in an SL syntax, that are enhanced to allow multiple time bases within a single presentation. Furthermore, the relation of time events within the scene description to the time stamps of the associated media streams is defined. Finally, it is noted that the SL packetized streams represent an intermediate layer that is further encapsulated in a transport protocol stack, as will be explained in Chapter 7.
