Chapter 6. Extensible MPEG-4 Textual Format > Cross-Standard Interoperability

6.2. Cross-Standard Interoperability

The XMT format can facilitate content interchange between SMIL players [SMIL01], VRML [VRML97] or X3D [X3D01] players, and MPEG-4 players. The XMT-Ω format can be preprocessed and played directly by a SMIL player; preprocessed to the corresponding X3D nodes and played back by a VRML/X3D player; or compiled to an MPEG-4 representation, such as an mp4 file (the exchangeable binary file format defined by MPEG-4), and played by an MPEG-4 player. Figure 6.1 presents a graphical description of the XMT interoperability capabilities it facilitates. MPEG-7, also shown in Figure 6.1, is an emerging standard for describing multimedia content [N4509]. The integration of MPEG-7 with XMT will enable the metadata markup of MPEG-4 content in the textual format and facilitate applications such as the content-based retrieval of MPEG-4 objects.
