Lesson 4. Use the Texture Editor

What You’ll Do

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the Texture Editor.

When you click the T icon to the right of one of the surface properties on the Basic tab in the Surface Editor, the Texture Editor dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 6.13. Using this dialog box, you can apply textures to the selected property. If you apply the texture to the Color property, the texture is wrapped to the surface; if you apply the texture to any other property, the image’s brightness is used to set the value at each pixel, with pure white representing a 100% value and black representing a 0% value. These textures can be Image Maps, Procedural Textures, or a Gradient. When you apply a texture to a surface property, the Texture icon is highlighted and the Property value is disabled. To remove a texture from a surface property, open the Texture Editor and click the Remove Texture button at the bottom of the dialog box.
