Chapter 2. what's new in modeling > Paint Soft Selection

Paint Soft Selection

Soft Selection, available in Editable Poly and Edit Poly modes only, is a way of creating a mask for other modifiers above it. Normally, you must make a regular selection for Soft Selection to appear. The Soft Selection appears as a colorful area around a selected sub-object. The regular selection is red, surrounded by a rainbow of colors that indicate the strength of the Soft Selection. The strongest influence is Orange, then Yellow, Green, and finally Blue, the weakest.

In 3ds max 7, a Soft Selection can now be painted, instead of just being an area radiating from the selection, even if a regular selection is not made. This is a more artistic and controllable way of creating selection sets. Click the new Paint button in the Soft Selection rollout to access this feature (Figure 2.3). You can pass this selection up the stack to other modifiers.
