Chapter 2. what's new in modeling > Select Poly by Angle

Select Poly by Angle

New to both Editable Poly and Edit Poly is the ability to select polygons based on their angle relative to the currently selected polygon. Once you select a polygon, all adjacent polygons whose difference in angle lies within a defined threshold will be selected. Polygons that are adjacent to the automatically selected polygons will also be evaluated and added to the selection if they fall within the threshold. In this way, you can grow your selection using Select Poly by Angle until the change in angle becomes greater than the threshold you have set.

What can you use Select Polygon by Angle for? For one thing, it's useful when texturing terrains; you can use it to select polys at a certain “slope” and apply a slope-specific terrain. It takes a little experimentation to see how this works For example, all the polygons on a six-sided cube will be selected if a single polygon is clicked while the threshold is set to 90 degrees. The polygon at the opposite side of the cube will be selected even though its angle difference is 180 degrees. All adjacent polygons are evaluated, and then the next set of adjacent polygons, until no adjacent polygons lie within the angle threshold from the increased selection. If you press the Alt key to remove polygons from the selection while clicking a selected polygon, and the angular threshold is set to 90 degrees, the entire cube will deselect.
