In This Chapter

In Chapter 6, “Fundamental Outdoor Lighting with Standard Lights,” you learned about lighting an outdoor scene with standard light types, specifically sunlight and omni lights. The omni lights were needed because standard lights rendered with the default Scanline renderer do not calculate the effect of light bouncing off surfaces. Therefore, the omni lights acted as fill lights to keep the shaded areas in the scene from being completely black. The advantage of using standard lights in any scene is that it can render quickly.

Figure 12.1 shows the interior of the command center with two standard omni lights in the overhead fixtures. The shadows have been turned on, and the scene was rendered with the default Scanline renderer. By default, the standard lights do not attenuate or diminish in strength over distance, so the scene is quite bright.
