Key Terms

  • Raytrace— In this case, raytrace refers to the shadows calculated by shooting sample rays at objects from light sources to determine the edges of shadows.

  • Hotspot/beam— An area of light from a source that has full illumination based on the intensity at the source.

  • Falloff/field— An area of light laterally outside the hotspot where the light diminishes in strength. Outside the falloff, there is no light.

  • Overshoot— The ability of a directional light (light cast within a cylinder) or spotlight (light cast within a cone) to simulate the effect of an omni light (all directions).

  • Angle of incidence— The angle that a light strikes a surface determines its intensity on the surface. Light striking a surface perpendicularly is full intensity.

  • Attenuation— The amount a light diminishes in strength as a function of the distance from the source.
