In This Chapter

In Chapter 4, “Shipbuilding 101: The Making of a Boat,” you learned to display background images and use those images as a guide for editing an existing model to add detail and shape it into a recognizable object. You were not concerned with a scale factor until after the modeling was finished and you could apply scale the model to match its real-world size.

In this chapter, you set up a scene that enables you to trace the contour lines of a background image of a topological map. You roughly trace the map with straight-line segments first, and then adjust the detail and smooth it out later. Finally, you use the Compound Object Terrain tool to surface the contour lines for an accurate landscape object.
