Chapter 1. Using Maya Well > What Maya Can Do

What Maya Can Do

When enumerating the features of Maya, it's tempting to instead prepare a list of what it can't do. It can't make your morning coffee, walk the dog, and so on—but the list of its shortcomings as a modern computer graphics application is awfully short. Maya has tremendous breadth and depth in its feature set, owing in large part to its impressive lineage (described later in this chapter), as well as the hard work and brilliance of the people at Alias|Wavefront.

Applications

Maya is adept at a great many things. Most CG users are well aware of the many feature films that have used Maya to produce outstanding special effects and compelling animation. From Lord of the Rings to Shrek, Titanic to Pearl Harbor, Star Wars: Episode I to Final Fantasy, The Mummy to The Matrix, and Ice Age to Monsters, Inc., Maya has been there, putting breathtaking scenes before our eyes and breathing life into characters. In just a few short years, Maya's strengths have made it nearly ubiquitous in feature film studios.
