Summary

The Maya interface is enormously customizable, so examine your workflow and consider how you might tailor that interface to suit you. Whether you undertake a complete UI overhaul or simply set up some hotkeys that you can remember, tuning Maya to your way of working is key to using the software as effectively as possible.

Also, although we'd be flattered if you chose to do everything our way, the real point is to identify your needs and come up with ways to meet them. A minor inconvenience might add only a couple of seconds to any step of your work, but if you put up with that inconvenience day after day, you both subtract that time from your life and add frustration and wear to your life.

At least occasionally, take the time to examine your work habits for inefficiencies and recurring tasks. You might find that devoting an entire day or two with each new Maya release is most effective, or you might be content to gradually chip away at the rough edges week after week until your process has become smooth. Whatever your plan of attack is, without one you'll be missing out on much of what Maya offers its users, all while slowed down by needless friction.

Your hotkeys might never be entirely set in stone, and your UI might never be fully optimized to your working style. But steady attention to these technical considerations can reward you with steady gains in productivity and personal comfort.
