Summary

Shader creation can be a very rewarding endeavor. Remember to carefully and critically observe all surfaces, and apply that observation to each shader you create. Experiment heavily to see what type of look you can attain in Maya. Try to use the best of both the procedural and painted world to get the best effect in your maps, and reuse the images in the other types of maps. Try to be as efficient as possible to program your shaders by reusing redundant nodes. If you do need a complex painted map, consider a projection technique due to its multiple advantages.
