Chapter 8. Sets > Pass It On

Pass It On

After your set model has been constructed, you should prepare it for downstream use. Even if you will be the only Maya user to lay your hands on it, taking some time to organize and double-check things now will almost certainly pay off later.

First, give the model some structure. Make it possible to turn on or off any reasonable portion of it by grouping and naming major subsections. For a model such as our city scene, start by dividing it up into blocks, streets, and sidewalks. Then divide each of these into smaller components, such as dividing blocks into buildings, buildings into facades, and facades into walls, doorways, and windows.
